The Diocesan Committee on the Environment

Our Mission

The Diocesan Committee on the Environment God the Creator calls us to be co-ministers in the work of creation; Jesus Christ the Redeemer calls us to a ministry of reconciliation with each other and the whole creation; the Holy Spirit, the Sustainer, calls us to implement our call to stewardship of creation. Therefore, the Committee on the Environment of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland sees as its response to these calls the accomplishment of the following five goals:

  1. To develop and carry out a Diocese-wide program of theological education, worship and action related to issues of the environment and sustainable development.
  2. To provide resources for parishes and individuals to foster reverence for God's creation and to carry out projects of environmental stewardship.
  3. As moved by the Holy Spirit, to “speak truth to power” in prophetic witness on behalf of the environment.
  4. To conduct advocacy on behalf of the environment.
  5. To work with the interfaith community on issues of common concern.

The committee is made up of clergy and laypeople alike. It seeks to provide spiritual underpinnings and be a community for Christians who struggle to be good stewards of God's creation. Visitors and new members are welcome. Meetings open with a short meditation. Recent business of the Committee has included advocacy on certain national, state, and local environmental issues; environmental education in church and Sunday schools; support for energy audits and environmentally sound administration of parish property; worship services to celebrate God's creation and repent of it desecration. The Committee shares environmental resources among its members and among the parishes.
