About General Convention

General Convention Come and Grow logo Members of the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies, along with vendors, guests, youth and others will meet in Columbus, Ohio from Monday, June 12 through Wednesday, June 21. Established in 1789 as the Episcopal Church's chief legislative body, General Convention will —throughout its Columbus meeting— encourage reflection upon four thematic dimensions: “Grow in the Spirit,” “Grow in Love,” “Grow in Hope,” and “Grow in All Ways into Christ.”

“The Episcopal Church meets every three years to conduct the affairs of the church, elect officers and members to standing committees and approve a budget for the next three years. It is a huge undertaking and is, based on my attendance in 2003, done with great care, much prayer and singing and hard work by the bishops and deputies in both houses. It is, in a way, like our Congress, but is only in session for ten days every three years,” noted 2003 and 2006 General Convention deputy David Mallery, St. Martin's in-the-Field, Severna Park.

Meet our Deputies

The General Convention Deputation of Maryland is working hard to prepare for our church's triennial meeting. In addition to the House of Deputies making a formal response to the Windsor Report and related materials, the House of Bishops will be electing a new Presiding Bishop (to be confirmed by the House of Deputies); the House of Deputies will be electing a new President; we will be working on the Millennium Development Goals, the basic goal of which is to eradicate poverty in the world; and we will be passing the Program and Budget of the Episcopal Church for the next three years.
